Great Expectations by Charles Dickens Chapters 1-3 give you a feeling of welcoming. The first three chapters aren't just comical but in some places they are edgy. The humour makes it enjoyable to read and the apprehensive situations make you want to read on to see what happens. Right from the beginning Dickens has aroused the readers interest. The story is told in First Person Retrospective Narrative. This enables Dickens in the early chapters to re-create the child's eye view whilst fusing it with adult judgements. ================================================================== Instantaneously we know that it is wrote in First Person Retrospective Narrative because of the use of the pro-noun "I". The main character "Pip" is introduced straight away and we find out his situation. Pip introduces himself and tells you a brief background on himself. By the third paragraph he has already established the setting - marshland (Desolate Area). He tells us what time it begins at - Twilight. (Anxiety already created). Quick exchanges between the characters gives a tense feeling. The convict steals Pip's bread and scoffs it as if he hasn't had anything to eat for some time. Epic Hero Analysis (Odyssey) Essay

What does it take to be an epic hero? To be an epic hero you are required to have five specific qualities. These consist of being human-like, being a confident and courageous solider, nobility, and being in a poem containing supernatural beings that has setting is vast in scope. In the poem the Odyssey, the main character fits the criteria. Odysseus is an epic hero. An important trait to being an epic hero is that the character is involved in a poem complicated by supernatural beings. To sail home in book 12, Odysseus has to navigate through the straits between two monsters, Scylla and Charybdis. As he is coming up on Scylla, he describes her: Her legs-And there are twelve- are like great tentacles, unjointed, and upon her serpent necks are borne six heads like nightmares of ferocity, with triple serried rows of fangs and deep gullets of black death. (12. 46-51) These lines prove that the creature Odysseus is facing is not a human being. It shows that Scylla has 12 tentacles, six heads, and three rows of teeth. No human would have any these characteristics. Not only does an epic hero have to be involved in a poem with supernatural characters, but a poem with a setting vast in scope that involves more than one nation. Odysseus tells the Phaeacians the tale of his wanderings in the beginning of book nine: My home is on the peaked sea-mark of Ithica under Mount Neion’s wind-blown robe of leaves, in sight of other islands- Dulichium, same, wooded Zacynthus- Ithica being most lofty in that costal sea, and northwest, while the rest lie east and south. (9. 10-15) Odysseus explains that he is from Ithica. He also explains that there are other nations around him. They are different than Ithica; like being â€Å"wooded† or â€Å"lofty.† This proves that he is part of a setting that includes a setting vast in scope. Another important trait is that the character has to be of noble birth, high position, and legendary. Many people rely on Odysseus and trust him. He explains to the Phaeacians in book nine, before he begins his big adventure, â€Å"Men hold me/formidable for guile in peace and war:† (9. 8-9). He proves that he has confidence in his authority. He knows his power; how strong and relied on in society. This gives the Phaeacians an idea of how noble and legendary he is. Despite being legendary, an epic hero is also the same as any ordinary man with longings, desires, and weaknesses. When Odysseus arrives at the land of the Cyclopes, his men advise him to snatch some of the food and leave, but to his and his crew’s detriment, he decides to stay, â€Å"Yet I refused. I wished/to see the caveman, what he had to offer-/no pretty sight, it turned out for my friends† (9. 130-132). Though he knew it wasn’t the right thing to do, Odysseus decided to stay. It is a very human-like characteristic to make mistakes. Humans do the things they want sometimes; even if they know it’s not the right thing to do. It shows he can be very much like a normal person at times and though he is trusted to always do the right things, he messes up too. Although epic heroes have human-like features, they are trained warriors and perform courageous and super human deeds for the benefit of others. In book 12, Odysseus knows that the wrath of the monsters, Scylla and Charybdis, lie ahead. Not wanting his men to be afraid and cowardly when they see the monsters, he prepares a speech to prepare them: ‘Friends, have we never been in danger before this? More fearsome, is it now, than when the Cyclops penned us in his cave? What power he had! Did I not keep my nerve, and use my wits to find a way out for us? (12. 143-147) Odysseus proves how heroic he is. He is a strong and intelligent when it comes to dealing with danger. By saying this, he prepares his men not to be afraid and to trust him that everything will be okay, just like all the other times he’s gotten them out of troublesome situations. When they finally reach the monsters, his men don’t chicken out and go forth with what he told them to do. Odysseus is stated to be an epic hero due to the characteristics he demonstrates in the poem the Odyssey. He reveals each of the five requirements needed. He shows he has human-like characteristics, strength, nobility and confidence in his authority throughout his adventures in the Odyssey. Developmental Disabilities Are Common Among People

Developmental disabilities are common among people. There are many different types of disabilities. One of the most common developmental disabilities is Autism. This disability is so common that chances are that everyone has come in contact with an autistic person at one point in their life. I especially became interested in learning about autism when I learned that a close family friend had an autistic child. My research focused on the history of autism and also finding the causes, symptoms, and treatments for an autistic person. Autism is more formally known as Autistic Spectrum Disorder. According to Vatanoglu-Lutz (2014) , â€Å"Autism is considered as one of the five pervasive developmental disorders, which are characterized by widespread abnormalities of social interactions and communication, and severely restricted interests and highly repetitive behavior† (p. 426). Although there is much known about autism today, in past years very little was known. In 1910 Eugen Bleuler was the first to use the word autism and a couple of years later Doctors Leo Kanner and Hans Asperger were among the first to diagnose this developmental disability. Leo Kanner, but, was originally from Austria, was a psychiatrist who studied at the University of Berlin. In 1943 Kanner studied 11 of his patients and included them in a paper he titled as Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact. This paper was later read by Hans Asperger. American businessmen overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893. The overthrow rooted from Congress approving the McKinley Tariff, which raised import rates on foreign sugar. This caused the sugar planters to go into an economic depression as they were being undersold in the American market. The farmers knew that the tariff and depression that Hawaii faced would disappear if Hawaii were to be annexed by the United States. At this time, Queen Liliuokalani was ruling. In 1893, the Queen attempted to introduce a new constitution to the Hawaiian people, which would give her more power in the government. She did not succeed in creating a new constitution; she was forced to abdicate and the foreigners in Honolulu set up a provisional government with the idea of annexation to the United States. During this time Grover Cleveland was president, his goal was to restore the Hawaiian monarchy, but the American people strongly favored annexation. Once Cleveland left office, war broke out with Spain in 1898. President McKinley signed a joint resolution annexing the islands, because they needed to use the Hawaiian naval bases as a stopping point on the way to the Spanish Philippines. Hawaii remained a territory of the United States until 1959 when they became the 50th state. Raku Ware and Staffordshire Pottery Essay Raku Ware was originally from Japan in the town of Kyoto and was named after the Raku family during the 16th Century. At this time, the Emperor Hideyoshi had conquered Korea and the native potters immigrated to Japan bringing with them pottery techniques and knowledge. The pots were produced for the Zan Buddhist tea ceremony and the decorating and firing of the pots were part of the tea ceremony. Bernard Leach introduced Raku into the west after living in Japan and China setting up pottery in St. Ives, England in 1920. It is still popular today, and made almost worldwide. Raku Ware is still produced today by the 14th generation, of the same Japanese family. Staffordshire was a large and important part of Britain for earthenware production. The first known examples of Staffordshire slipware date back to early Seventeenth Century. Even though lead-glazed earthenware seemed to be established before this time, the market generally went beyond Staffordshire. Butter pots made in Staffordshire were well known for their quality by dairy farmers in England and surrounding areas. Slipwares are named for their decoration with liquid clays, usually poured or trailed onto the pot. Although this was a highly developed technique in Staffordshire it was used in other surrounding areas such as London and Wrotham. Staffordshire slipware usually has three categories flatware which are plates, dishes and bowls, jugs and lidded pots are classified as hollow ware, and miscellaneous ware includes money boxes, cradles and candle sticks. Just as tea was important in the development of Raku Ware in Japan, so the Elers brothers who studied salt glazes in Europe and moved to Staffordshire in the 1690s, produced small tea pots, tea canisters, teacups and jugs. They used finely prepared red clay which was thrown on the wheel, and then lathed when leather hard. Common salt is thrown into the kiln during firing 1200oc to produce a salt glaze In Raku any clay that copes with the firing technique must be able to withstand heat shock without warping, distorting or cracking. The clay needs to have particles in it to allow water to escape quickly so calcinated China clay or clay with temper grog, flint or shell added to it, is successful. This clay occurred naturally in Japan. Many contemporary potters have favourite clay recipes for their clay bodies when making Raku Ware. Staffordshire slipware clays usually have trouble withstanding higher temperatures without distorting and warping while stoneware can. It was discovered that when calcined flint was added to the clay, it would allow the pot to withstand higher temperatures and even whiten the overall appearance of the pot. This whitening effect in the pots was adapted as a alternative to porcelain. There was not a suitable white firing china clay as used in the East, found in England, except in Cornwall. The porcelains in the Staffordshire area are known as soft paste because of their low firing temperature and the clay body was rich in quartz and low in clay with glass frit and lime or gypsum added to get rid of the unwanted iron-oxide colour. Wedgewood developed his cream wares by adding china stone and china clay to the body he was using resulting in a whitish blue strong body known as pearl ware. He also developed coloured clays to imitate stones such as jasper, basalt and onyx. In the early 18th the firing technique for Staffordshire Ware changed to a two staged firing. The first was on the unglazed pot to produce biscuit ware, which was dipped in a lead glaze and re-fired at a lower temperature. By the end of the 18th century the kilns moved from wood and charcoal burning to coal burning. These kilns* were larger with five or more mouths and a distinctive bottle shaped encasing chimney. These improved firing techniques allowed more decorative styles and improved appearance with hand painting and printing of border designs, figure painting and landscapes becoming popular.
